Our good friends brought over their lovable basset hound Theo last night to visit with Sophie and Manny. Through our visit i thought it would be a good idea to take a few shots of Theo and the rest of the kids.

Sophie has a cone on her head right now because she had what's called Cherry Eye; a common condition with dogs of her type where the tear duct pops out of the membrane that's supposed to hold it in place. I know...it sounds nasty but not a big deal, got it fixed...i was hoping for a doggie pirate eye patch, but no luck, just a cone. She's a trooper, and secretly a pirate.

New Family Addition: Sophie! Caution: Cuteness OVERLOAD.

I can't say how excited we were, when we finally got to bring Sophie home with us. Dacia & I welcomed Sophie into our family yesterday. (you could say i was slightly excited to take pictures of her.) Sophie is a 10 week old, purebred Boston Terrier, and a loving bundle of kiss giving joy. It didn't take her too long to get used to our home and the new environment. Before long she was ripping around the living room doing what pups do best; be cute as heck! So here are a few shots of our newest little bundle of love.

Also if you love your pet as much as we do and would like to have pictures taken of them, don't hesitate to bring them to our Studio. We are very much so pet friendly and would love to photograph your pet!

Chilliwack Maternity Photography: Liz & Family

My good friend Liz, her husband Greg, and their boy Baron came over to my home studio today to have some maternity photos taken of her. We missed the first child, but the second one wasn't fast enough to escape! Liz is about 3 weeks away from her due date. I loved this shoot. It was just one of those shoots where everything comes together melodically. This was kind of an experiment to try a different type of lighting. Here are the results.

So when Dan Matheson of Homelife Glenayre Realty in Chilliwack asked me to do a few interior shots of a brand new condo, i jumped at the chance to do something different in photography i had never done before.     Ted: September was another busy month, but as promised last month, I came up with a new idea for our newsletter.

   I believe that as an artist it’s important to know the point of view of other successful artists. I recently interviewed a talented photographer from the Lower Mainland, Chris Elander. Some of you may remember him from the previous newsletters when he shared some of his amazing photos with us. Please check his photos on his Website.

Chris, can you please introduce yourself to our readers?

Chris: Hey there! I'm Chris! Wedding Photographer by day….professional hair comb tester by night. (Just kidding!)

Ted: How did you get in to photography?

Chris: Funny story! My very first interview was at a Save-On Foods Grocery Store in my home town. The position I was being interviewed for was actually for the Bakery Department. It was the usual question and answer scenario and towards the end of the interview the manager excused himself to take a call. Upon his return he says "Oh by the way, do you want to work in the Photo Lab instead?" And the rest is history!

Ted: What format do you usually use?

Chris: I think I can count on both hands the amount of film I've shot. The medium of choice is definitely digital! I shoot with a Nikon D700 and a D200 as back up. I use the Nikon 24-70 F2.8, a Nikon 70-200 F2.8 and a Nikon 50mm F1.8. I always shoot in 14 Bit RAW.

Ted: Why RAW file?

Chris: Shooting RAW gives me the opportunity to bring out such a wide dynamic range in any image and push the camera to its full potential. With the right software you can pull out so much detail with a RAW file. It gives me the ability to fine tune the highlights and keep as much or as little detail in the shadows as I like. JPEG is so limited with the amount of adjustments you can make to the file. I definitely try to shoot things right to begin with, but hey, we're all human, we all make mistakes and shooting RAW definitely helps with recovering information in the event that you're slightly under or over exposed.

Ted: I have heard some photographers claim that JPEG is good enough. What is your opinion?

Chris: I think it's just a matter of educating yourself as a professional. I was a JPEG shooter for a long time, then with a good explanation and the right software I saw the vast difference in my own work between JPEG and RAW. Just have an open mind and don't be afraid to explore. I always want my work to speak for itself and the better the quality of my work, the more confident I am in knowing my clients are getting fantastic quality photos.

Ted: For me “good enough” does not exist! It is either “good” or it is “not good”.
I hear photographers insisting that JPEG is all you need; if you know how to shoot a picture! What do you think?

Chris: I think if you truly appreciate the art in photography and care about the product your clients receive (whether they know the difference or not) then shooting RAW is a must.

Ted: I have seen many of your pictures and must say that you are very creative and talented. I really like the way you use flashes and ambient light to create something different and dramatic. Why it is necessary for a photographer, especially a wedding photographer, to use some sort of strobe or flashes?

Chris: With flash, specifically off camera, you have full creative control over everything! I often take one shot with natural light only, then with the use of OCF (off camera flash) I can make the same situation look and feel completely different. Sometimes the situations you run into as a wedding photographer are extremely hard to work in (direct harsh sunlight or dimly lit ceremony halls) and the only way to execute it properly is by using flash. With OCF the creative options are limitless.

Ted: If you want to hire a photographer for your wedding, what are the most important qualifications that you are going to consider?

Chris:

1. Experience Level
I want to hire someone who specializes in Wedding Photography. Not someone who is learning or just getting into shooting weddings.

2. Gear
I want my photographer to be using high end professional gear. It's true that anyone can create fantastic images with any camera, but I have confidence in saying that high end professional gear is built to do the job. Whether you're shooting in a dimly lit church or shooting in the rain, pro camera bodies and lenses are made to give you the best result in the end.

3. Personality & Professionalism
It's definitely a must to have a photographer who is going to make you feel super comfortable in front of the camera. As a photographer, you get a good feel for how much direction a couple or person will need. Punctuality is also a must! Usually when booking a wedding photographer you will meet with the photographer, and if someone is not on time for a meeting I'd say that’s a huge red flag. The other side to shooting weddings is the business side of things. Does the photographer run a legitimate business? Do they have insurance for themselves, their gear, and their clients?

Ted: Every now and then one style of editing or composing gets to be popular. For example after the movie Twilight or Alice in Wonderland, or tilting the camera; we have seen these styles become very trendy and fashionable. What do you think about this? Do you still take the classical style photos or do you change your style according to the market’s demand?

Chris: I think following trends are not productive for your own personal style. Every photographer should develop his or her own personal style and become good at that.
I mean, how many times can you see hands in the shape of a heart on a pregnant belly, or shots on railroad tracks? I find a good way of shooting involves using the lines of your environment, being creative with light, and conscious composition. It's almost impossible to re-produce those types of images without thinking the same as I do, and being in the same location.

South Side Church: Baptism at Cultus Lake

Well today was an eventful day! My good friend Brad and his wife Erin of Newlove Decor & Design asked me to photograph Brad's baptism for South Side Church in Chilliwack. It was exciting because i have never had the chance to photograph any baptisms in the past. The event was held at Main Beach at Cultus Lake. Congrats to Brad and the rest! Winding down after a long day i decided to take a few shots of our dog Manny. I was inspired by a photographer's blog i saw (Scruffy Dog Photography) while i was browsing online today. Now maybe my dog is just hard to photograph, who knows, but i can tell you for sure that dog photography is tough stuff! I also would love to remind everyone with pets that our studio is definitely pet friendly, and we would love to shoot your animals! lol boy that didn't come out right....you know what i mean!! ;)

Today was fun! I was a second shooter/assistant for Laura Henderson of Filmless Photography whom i've worked with several times before. I didn't really do much shooting but the fun thing about being a second shooter is you can capture all the fun things that happen on the sidelines when you would normally be occupied shooting the wedding couple. A few shots from the day, which include Dad, and also a wedding photographer; Josh Horvey from Studio H Photography.

When i meet with wedding clients i will often ask them how their process of finding a wedding photographer has gone so far, and i always hear "Well we've looked at a lot of wedding photographers so far but there's so many to chose from and we really don't know what we're looking for" Then i ask them why they chose to meet with me, and i always hear "Well, we just liked your work." I always like to hear that :) I like to hear that because it means my work is speaking for itself. It doesn't matter if you have the best gear, or if you're the best networked person on Facebook, or if you come up on the first page of Google. Your work should speak for itself. If I had to make a list of things for people to look for in a photographer (besides the business aspect of things), i would say look at their work. Their work will tell you if they are a new or an experienced photographer. Their work will tell you if they are a person who is capable of handling the responsibilities and technical aspects of being a professional photographer....especially on your wedding day. So here are a few things to look out for when searching through the interwebs for the right photographer.

Ok, we start out with an original image. Properly exposed, not too dark or too light, lots of detail in the dress, while maintaining the details in the shadows, skin tones look accurate. This is what you're looking for.

The second image is completely blown out, almost all the detail in the dress is lost. Brides pay thousands of dollars for a wedding dress, if you can't capture the detail of it, what's the difference between a burnt out wedding dress and a cotton bed sheet?

The third image is all about shadows. They give any image definition. In this shot the blacks were completely lost and her head seems to blend in with the background giving the image a 2D effect. Again, this is NOT what you want.

Image #4!!! Bad white balance/editing. Skin should be made to look vibrant and healthy. A photographer should know how to edit and color correct the images to look natural. I often see lovely yellow/greenish skin tones that make me wonder if people are sick. Hopefully not.

Image #5: The Vintage Look. Not bad for 1 or 2 images in a shoot if the mood of the image suits the vintage look. I think some photographers go overkill though, editing entire shoots with this one look. Kind of a fad if you ask me...what happens in 10 years down the road when the fad is no longer in style? My opinion is: Good photography is Timeless. It means that 10 years down the road when you pull out all the old photos they won't leave you scratching your head wondering why your wedding photos look so weird....and vintage.

Image #6: Hahahaha I love this one. I call this the "kind of sorta almost in focus" lol! If you're browsing through websites checking out any professional photographers work, it should be TACK SHARP and in focus in the right places. For example when shooting a head shot or portrait, 99% of the time any head shot should be focused on the eyes. Not the nose...eyebrows...top of their head...shoulder...or collar. Any classic portrait is about the eyes. There are always exceptions to the rule though and when you see an experienced photographer break those rules, they are intentional and obvious.

Image 7: The Tilter.... Yes, we're all guilty of a little tilting now and then but you have to know when to tilt. An artistic tilt can give an image a lot of strength if it's done properly. Even I was a chronic tilter, it's a hard habit to break. If you're cruising galleries where all of the images are tilted, it might make you wonder if the photographer is able to take a straight picture on purpose. Last time i checked the earth wasn't falling to one side...(let me go check again.....) yep still the same.

Image 8. Over-sharpening. This causes the images to look unnatural and cartoonish. A little bit of sharpening can add a lot of punch to an image though.

Image 9: Over-saturating. Sure, nice bright vibrant colors are great and add a lot of life to an image but over saturating an image makes the image look way too altered and fake. Notice how my bride here has instantly turned into an Oompa Loompa.

So that's it! That's my opinion on what to look for and what to avoid when searching out a qualified wedding photographer. I hope it helps!

Oregon Coast Road Trip!

My lovely girlfriend *ahem* (i should get used to saying fiance' by now) and i decided that this year to celebrate our anniversary, we would do a road trip down the coast of Oregon. She had been before but i haven't. The scenery along the 101 highway down the coast is simply breathtaking and motorcycle heaven!!! It's definitely hard to take a bad picture wherever you point the camera down there. Here are some of my favorites from the trip.

These next few images were taken at the Newport Aquarium where you can walk through an entire tunnel that is surrounded by water where you can watch the fish swim all around you.

And finally one of my super favorites from the trip!! ;) lol Of course she said YES!

This wedding was one of the best I've shot all season. It's rare that you get to shoot a couple who are not only brilliantly natural in front of the camera, but also gave me the time to shoot during the day. This couple was referred to me from Filmless Photography by Laura Henderson Laura was unable to shoot this great couple because she was leaving to travel in South America. Thanks Laura!!! Do you know how hard it is to fly fish in the cold!? INCREDIBLY hard. You know its cold when ice gathers on your fishing line. Even the fish were too cold to bite. I didnt catch anything, but i did manage to sneak a few shots in while trying to warm the fingers between casts.
